Itchy Hands

This is what my brain looks like when it’s developing ideas.

We artists often forget to showcase the wonderful places our minds go to when we problem-solve, problem-find, and even when we’re idling. Too often we only see the final results and rarely the dynamic and non-linear journey.

I’ve put together a little book of sketches and unfinished work in 2013 called Itchy Hands to celebrate the chaos of my design process. Without it, none of my ideas would be where they are today.

Deer & Centipede

My mom saved tons of doodles from when I was young—the drawing above I did when I was 8 (1996). I’d always bring along a clipboard of scratch paper and a pen when she made me go shopping with her.

Studying and drawing animals is so therapeutic for me. There’s so much to learn from their forms and the way nature engineered them.

Single Male's Apartment

I like to break it apart environments by exploring all the nooks and crannies first with sketches and music. This way I can deeply focus and vividly imagine all the richness of textiles, color palettes, materials, finishes, forms, atmosphere, lighting, sounds, and smells that all come together to tell a rich story of the space.
